Senate Intelligence leaders suspect Republicans leaked a top Democrat's text messages

WASHINGTON — The Senate Intelligence Committee has concluded that Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee were behind the leak of private text messages between the Senate panels top Democrat and a Russian-connected lawyer, according to two congressional officials briefed on the matter.

Sen. Richard Burr (pictured) and Mark Warner (D-Va.) demanded the rare sit down to talk about their findings and general concerns about Nunes.

Days later, however, the texts were published by Fox, disclosing only that it had obtained them "from a Republican source", the Times reported.

Fox News published the texts on February 8, days after they were leaked and shortly following the release by House Intelligence Republicans of their memo alleging surveillance abuses by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department in its Russian meddling probe.

"The speaker heard the senators on their concerns and encouraged them to take them up directly with their counterparts", Ryan spokeswoman AshLee Strong said.

A lawyer for Waldman also concluded that the leak likely came from House Republicans, per the Times.

The texts were an effort by Mr. Warner to contact Christopher Steele, the ex-British intelligence officer behind the notorious anti-Trump dossier alleging long-standing connections between the Kremlin and President Trump's campaign.

That Nunes would leak Warner's confidential text messages is ironic, given that he spent much of 2017 running interference for Trump by publicly claiming his campaign officials had their privacy violated when their names appeared in intelligence reports. Nunes drafted and pushed for public release a controversial memo last month accusing the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation of impropriety in their separate probe into the Russian meddling and possible connections to President Donald Trump's campaign.

Burr and Warner told the Times in a joint statement that they did meet with Ryan but did not request any specific action.
