Orange County to join fight against California sanctuary law

The votes were the most dramatic development in a growing counter-movement in more conservative-leaning areas of the state against the sanctuary law, which the Democrat-controlled Legislature approved previous year as the Trump administration called for more stringent immigration enforcement and a wall on the entirety of the US-Mexico border.

State Sen. Kevin de Leon, a Democrat, who authored SB 54, disputed the assertion that the bill harms the ability of law enforcement to hand over risky undocumented immigrants to ICE.

The Orange County Board of Supervisors voted on Tuesday, March 27 to join a Trump administration lawsuit against California's controversial sanctuary law.

When Becerra was asked if his comments meant a potential arrest or lawsuit against Orange County's sheriff, Becerra responded, "I think I just answered that".

Supervisor Todd Spitzer said it was an issue of law enforcement safety.

The county supported Trump's opponent, Hillary Clinton, in the 2016 presidential election, the first time it voted for a Democrat since the Great Depression.

It has been estimated that 65 percent of all deportations are the result of cooperation between state and local law enforcement and federal officers.

Speaking during his opening monologue on "Hannity" Tuesday night, Sean praised Orange County officials who are openly rejecting California's "unconstitutional" Sanctuary City policies; saying the state's liberal legislators are violating federal law. "Along the way, law enforcement should absolutely cooperate fully within the constraints of federal law", she said.

De Leon said the "efforts to portray hardworking immigrants as criminals are a repulsive, black stain on California's history". For years, some local governments have sought to help federal immigration agents pick up prisoners from their jails to prevent them from being released back into their communities, while others have tried to keep their distance to encourage immigrant residents to trust police enough to come forward to report crimes. The agency's goal is to help U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents "remove risky offenders from our community".

". From a legal standpoint, what we are choosing to do, with asking our county counsel to intervene the litigation, is not to go rogue, but to get in front of the court", Nelson said. "It just doesn't make sense", Doris Matyasovich told the board.

"Attorney General Jeff Sessions is seeking to throw out this law. Will you be able to do the same?"

"This action will enhance communication between the Sheriff's Department and our law enforcement partners to remove unsafe offenders from our community", the department said in a statement Tuesday, openly challenging California State Bill 54, otherwise known as the California Values Act, which restricts police communication with federal immigration authorities.

Sen. Kevin de León, D-Los Angeles, chastised Orange County leaders in a statement Tuesday: "This kind of obsessive immigrant bashing is embarrassing to the county and its residents, and seems created to court the approval of a racist President and his cronies".

"The notion that the California legislature is looking to punish our local law enforcement is nonsense", he said.

"State law is state law".

Beginning this week, the Orange County Sheriff's Department has begun including the time and date of release of jail inmates identified in a pre-existing database that is available online.
