New Toyota Auris revealed at Geneva

On the eve of this week's Geneva Motor Show, Europe's first major vehicle show of the year, Toyota said it will stop selling diesel cars in Europe, beginning the phase-out this year.

An auto industry turning away from diesel and European drivers increasingly favouring hybrid cars: add it up and the result is clear - advantage Toyota.

The manufacturer is to boost further sales of petrol-electric hybrid cars which already account for almost half (45 per cent) of sales in the United Kingdom previous year, rising to 48 per cent in January.

Overall, diesel vehicle sales here fell 17pc in the year to January last. Registrations have become increasingly weighted towards hybrids since 2015, when sales were split evenly between hybrids and diesels.

In addition to the hybrid versions, the all-new Auris will offer a single conventional engine, a 1.2-liter turbocharged gasoline unit.

The new Auris is built on the Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) architecture, which is already used by the current Prius and C-HR models, which simplifies vehicle design in key areas while improving rigidity and lowering the centre of gravity. Ford still backs diesel but sees it disappearing in some segments, according to Steven Armstrong, chief of the automaker's European operations.

The announcement follows one from Toyota's division in Italy which confirmed in January this year that it would no longer sell diesel-powered passenger cars in the country.

Following up on yesterday's leak, the 2019 Toyota Corolla has now made its official debut at the Geneva motor show in Switzerland.

Strong customer demand for HEV versions on its core models means Toyota will phase out diesel engines from all its passenger cars in 2018. Customers have a choice of a 122-hp 1.8-liter or a 180-hp 2.0-liter hybrid powertrains.

The vehicle firm said that 2017 hybrids represented 41 percent of Toyota Motor Europe total sales.

LED lights at the front and rear contribute to modern, edgy looks that follow the similarly styled Camry and C-HR. It must be noted that Toyota will continue to offer diesel engines on its commercial vehicles like the Hilux, Proace and Land Cruiser.
