New study shows gun-related injures drop during NRA conventions

Maybe convention-goers are the most active gun users.

"These findings are consistent with reductions in firearm injuries occurring as a result of lower rates of firearm use during the brief period when many firearm owners and owners of places where firearms are used may be attending an NRA convention", Jena and Olenski write.

UPS maintains that it's a "common carrier", and that if a shipper like the NRA "is engaged in lawful conduct, has an item that is legal to ship, and agrees to the company's terms and conditions regarding the shipment, UPS will transport their shipment from origin to destination".

"But, the drop in gun injuries during these large meetings, attended by thousands of well-trained gun owners, seems to refute the idea that gun injuries stem exclusively from lack of experience and training in gun use".

The findings are based on records from a national insurance claims database. For one thing, about 85 percent of people who attend the conference are men, so that helps to explain why men have the greatest drop in firearm injuries during the conference, Jena said.

The study examined almost 76 million medical insurance claims for emergency department visits and hospitalisations related to firearm injuries between 2007 and 2015.

The NRA is indeed one of the most powerful gun rights lobbies in the U.S., spending millions every year to advance its agenda in Congress.

The greatest reductions in firearm injuries happened on convention days in these groups: men, people in southern and western USA states, people in states within the top one-third for gun-ownership rates and people who lived in the state hosting the convention, Jena and Olenski said.

Senate Intelligence leaders suspect Republicans leaked a top Democrat's text messages
Burr and Warner told the Times in a joint statement that they did meet with Ryan but did not request any specific action. Both the House and Senate Intelligence Committees are conducting probes into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

Alex Noren, Webb Simpson weather wind, share Honda Classic lead
Daniel BergerBerger grew up right down the road and played collegiate golf at Florida State, so he should be comfortable here. If that's not decent enough form, Knox did finish third in the 2015 Honda Classic and runner-up in the 2014 Honda Classic .

Researchers were unable to measure whether convention dates also coincided with a decline in gun-related deaths, since gun-related homicides, suicides and fatal accidents are relatively rare.

The new study is the latest in a series of analyses published by Jena looking into the effects of large meetings or events on various health outcomes.

Other studies examined what happens to people who need emergency medical treatment when the streets of a city are shut down and crowded with spectators during major marathon races and how the presence of safety inspectors impacts patient care during hospital accreditation visits.

The NRA doesn't rely heavily on commercial partnerships - except donations from gun companies.

Jennifer Baker, a spokesperson for the NRA, told CNN that the study's results were "absurd", adding, "This study claims that firearms-related injury plummets 20 percent nationwide when less than one-tenth of 1 percent of gun owners attend this event?"

In 2014, there were more than 65,000 intentional firearm injuries in the United States and almost 16,000 unintentional firearm injuries.

But that's simply not the case, according to Dr. Frederick Rivara, of the Harborview Injury Prevention and Research Center, in Seattle.
