Jamie Carragher apologises for spitting incident and 'moment of madness'

Jamie Carragher apologises for spitting incident and 'moment of madness'

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been suspended from his role as a Sky Sports pundit after video footage emerged of him spitting towards a girl in a vehicle, the television company said on Monday.

The incident reportedly happened after Carragher was "goaded" following Manchester United's 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Saturday. The spit hit a 14-year-old girl in the passenger seat of the auto.

After Sky announced his suspension, Carragher described it as "a moment of madness and not representative of the real me", according to Sky Sports News.

The former Liverpool defender-turned sportscaster has already apologized to the teenage girl, while it remains to be seen how his current employer, Sky Sports, will handle the incident. Bristow argued on Twitter that the victims weren't "proper men" because they didn't stand up to and "sort out" their abusers.

Former Manchester City footballer Joey Barton also chimed in on talkSPORT, saying "Look, he's made a mistake".

"I've been on TV for three years with him and imo [in my opinion] this isolated incident shouldn't stop us working together". I've brought shame on the name of Sky Sports and the broadcaster.

"Obviously I've had Sky Sports, family, and the people most affected are the family involved". Say that was me, I think my position would be under fire and I think [his] will be.

Asked if he had explained the incident to his family yet, Carragher said he had not as he had travelled down to London early on Monday.

A lively on-air partnership has been formed with former Manchester United rival Gary Neville, who backed Carragher to keep his job. Again, I've just got no excuse. Sky have confirmed that he has been suspended for his actions. I apologise for that, I wish I could go back and change it but all I can do now is speak to you, speak to the family like I did last night and hopefully going forward I can speak to the family again. There is no doubt what I have done is disgusting and I apologise for it.
