Government must protect United Kingdom automotive jobs in Brexit negotiations

The PM will start the day by visiting textile workers at a factory in Ayrshire, before travelling to Newcastle to meet with a local parent and toddler group.

Prime Minister Theresa May has called for greater flexibility from the European Union in discussions on a post Brexit relationship.

Scottish Brexit Minister Mike Russell said: "Scotland voted by a margin of 24 points to remain in the European Union but the response of the UK Government has been to seek to impose a disastrous hard Brexit and mount a power grab on the Scottish Parliament. The UK contains four proud and historic nations, but together we amount to so much more than the sum of our parts and our union is an enormous force for good".

The tumultuous Brexit process, triggered by the June 2016 referendum on EU membership, was legally initiated on March 29 last year, when United Kingdom officials gave notice to the European Commission that it was triggering Article 50 of the EU Treaty - under which a member state gives two years' notice of its intention to leave.

The prime minister pledged to defend the integrity of the United Kingdom which, as it prepares to leave the EU, she (perhaps pointedly) described as "the world's most successful union".
