On migration and support for refugees, Tusk said that the European Union and Turkey remain very close partners.

"I hope that we have left a tough period in the relations between Turkey and Europe behind us".

The PKK is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey as well as the US and the EU.

Ankara has agreed to buy air defence systems from Russian Federation and Moscow will also build Turkey's first nuclear power station.

Juncker insisted that he was not in favour of stopping negotiations with Turkey but urged Ankara to improve relations with member states like Cyprus and Greece.

At least 12 PKK terrorists were "neutralized" Monday during operations as part of the Turkish military's fight against the terror group in northern Iraq and in Turkey.
