Disgraced Smith and Warner also banned from IPL

Steve Smith has also been stripped of his captaincy and one can be pretty sure that after the ban there will be very little chance for him to become captain of the Australian team again. A formal announcement is expected soon.

The Cricket Australia Board chose to take action themselves and gave staggering one-year bans from worldwide and domestic cricket to both Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner, while Bancroft received nine months.

Smith and Warner have confessed about their role in the pre-planned strategy to tamper the ball to seek unlawful advantage during the South African innings.

Magellan inked a three-year partnership in August 2017 as naming rights sponsor for Australia's domestic Tests in a deal estimated at the time to be worth Aus$$20 million.

Prior to this move, Smith and Warner had resigned from their positions as captains of the Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively.

And ex-Australia global Warne, who was handed a one-year suspension in 2003 after testing positive for a banned substance, says the reaction to the incident has gone over the top.

The two top Australian players have been punished, yet one has a lurking suspicion that the coach Darren Lehmann and a few other players who formed the think camp of the Australian team could also be involved.

"The thing for me would be if we take a leaf out of someone like, say, New Zealand's book in the way they play and respect the opposition", Lehmann said, promising the Australian team would mend its ways.

Although Smith and Bancroft have fronted up the media soon after the outbreak of the scandal, Warner, who is termed as the instigator in the entire row and someone who tutored Bancroft to tamper with the ball, had remained quite even as the Australian cricket team continued to face a lot heat.

"But are there levels of ball tampering, or is it just ball tampering? It is hoped that following a period of suspension, the players will be able to return to playing the game they love and eventually rebuild their careers", he said.

The trio will be replaced for the fourth and final Test at The Wanderers in Johannesburg by opening batsmen Matthew Renshaw and Joe Burns, as well as all-rounder Glenn Maxwell.

"It's Australian to play it hard, and tough". They will also have to complete 100 hours of voluntary service in community cricket to regain the trust of the fans.

Further sanctions will be announced shortly after preliminary findings of the investigation into the ball-tampering controversy in the third Test in Cape Town are completed, Sutherland said. Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft have been suspended by Cricket Australia for their involvement and knowledge about the cheating plot. "They are hurting and I feel for them and their families", the former Australia batsman told the media.
