Del Potro Stays Perfect Against Thiem, Meets Zverev In Acapulco SFs

Zverev assumed top ranking after the late withdrawal of Rafael Nadal and he had not lost a set all week.

Del Potro, the No. 7 seed, won 6-2, 7-6 (9) to set up a semifinal showdown against No. 2 seed Alexander Zverev.

The Argentine never lost a break point all night and hit only one double fault. Donaldson was a ideal 20-for-20 on first-serve points and 12-of-14 on his second-serve attempts.

South Africa's Anderson moved one step closer to capturing his second consecutive title with his win over American qualifier Donaldson.

Anderson, of Johannesburg, won the New York Open crown two weeks ago. "I feel like I've played really well throughout the week, and I think it has showed a great maturity to my game and how much I've improved", Donaldson said. "When you're out there, you're not really thinking about finals and what happened before".

The Argentine won the title by battling through a tough draw that included a trio of top 10 players.

Anderson fell to as low as World No 80 last January after a variety of injuries and health issues set the right-hander back.

"It's a very special tournament to me, " said del Potro, the 2009 US Open champion.

On the women's side, Lesia Tsurenko successfully defended her WTA Mexican Open title by rallying from a first set loss to beat Stefanie Voegele 5-7, 7-6 (7/2), 6-2.

Tsurenko frittered away six match points before finally booking her spot in the final.

After dominating the tiebreak to even up the contest, the 28-year-old world number 40 walzed through the final set to secure the fourth title of her career.

Voegele and Tsurenko managed 13 breaks of service between them, but it was defending champion Tsurenko who broke three times in the deciding set to claim victory, her fourth on the WTA Tour. The fifth seed held five break points in the first game of the second set to grab a commanding lead, but failed to convert.

"I think it was just getting more and more tough in the second set because her defence was just wonderful", the 28-year-old told reporters after extending her ideal record against Gavrilova to 5-0.

"It's another opportunity for me", Anderson said.
