The slain included, according to police, four civilians and also two militants of the Lashkar e Toiba outfit.

Earlier, 4 civilians and a militant were killed on Sunday evening in Shopian district when gunmen attacked army vehicle. The FIR was stayed by the Supreme Court last month following an appeal by the officer's father.

The Sunday evening shootout occurred when suspected militants travelling in two private vehicles opened fire at an Army mobile checkpoint on the outskirts of Shopian, about 55 km (34 miles) south of Srinagar city, said Col. Rajesh Kalia, a military spokesman who is based there.

Indian army spokesperson said that the civilians were OGW workers of the rebels.

The civilians were identified as Suhail Ahmad of Pinjora, M Shahid Khan of Kilopora Malikgund and Shahnawaz Ahmad Wagay of Molu Trenz villages. "In retaliatory firing, one terrorist identified as Shahid Ahmad Dar, son of Mushtaq Ahmad Dar, resident of Jamnagri, Shopian was killed and a weapon has been found with him". A fourth civilian's body was recovered from a nearby auto, officials said, and the body of another rebel was found a few kilometers (miles) away. Local residents and family members of those killed have maintained that the victims were civilians.

He said, "What is so painful is that killings and bloodshed both in Kashmir and on Kashmir can easily be stopped if only the main cause of it ie the Kashmir dispute, is addressed and the status quo discarded". Ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) vice president Sartaj Madni called the Shopian incident "outrageous" and condemned it. Mohd Yousuf Bhat said that the law enforcing agencies are not learning any lessons from previous such experiences.
