'Black Panther' becomes top-grossing superhero film in North America

Black Panther reigned in the box office's number one spot for six weeks before being taken down by "Pacific Rim Uprising" starring John Boyega.

The superhero film is now officially the most Tweeted-about movie of all time attracting more than 35 million Tweets from fans of the fictitious #Wakanda kingdom. Box office analysts who spoke with TheWrap project the highly anticipated "Avengers: Infinity War" to gross at least $700 million domestic. It now holds a worldwide total gross of $1.23 billion.

In addition to being a great film, Black Panther has been making movie history since it first debuted in mid-February, and now it's reached its biggest milestone of all. To boot, Black Panther is only one of seven films to ever earn $600 million or more domestically (it now ranks No. 6 on the list).

According to studio estimates Sunday, "Black Panther" slid to second place with $16.7 million in its sixth week.

It has continued to shatter records, and has landed itself numerous biggest-hits titles, including third-biggest comic book adaptation globally.

In the USA, this past weekend was the first since Black Panther was released that it was not the No. 1 film.

Ryan Coogler's film is also the best-reviewed film of the 18-movie series, with a 97% rating on review aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes.

Update: Variety is reporting that Black Panther has logged in $631 million to date at the United States box office, making it the the highest-grossing superhero movie in the U.S, ever.
