Bears apply transition tag on CB Kyle Fuller

The Chicago Bears used the transition tag on cornerback Kyle Fuller, guaranteeing Fuller $12.971 million for 2018 and giving Chicago the right to match any offers.

The transition tag also affords the Bears more time than the July 15 franchise tag deadline to hammer out a long-term deal with the DB. The exclusive franchise tag makes it so the player can only negotiate with his team, and the non-exclusive franchise tag makes it so if a player signs with another team, his original team gets two first-round picks. He's unlikely to get the franchise tag which could open up the bidding to other teams, according to a report from Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.

This means that the Bears can offer a one-year contract to Fuller that is the average of the top ten cornerback salaries in the NFL.

In order to secure the Penn State running back's services though, they likely have to take him with the first overall selection. It started off poorly Thursday, when Brown managed just 14 bench press reps despite measuring in at 6-foot-8, 345 pounds.

Last week at the scouting combine in Indianapolis, Bears general manager Ryan Pace characterized the team's talks with Fuller as, "pretty aggressive", and added, "Obviously we like Kyle, and he had a good season, and we're happy with the way he's progressed".

Fuller, 26, was the 14th-overall pick in the 2014 National Football League draft out of Virginia Tech. This year, Fuller had 22 passes defended for the Bears and grew into the sort of lockdown role on the outside that the Bears pictured when they invested such a high pick.

It saved his tenure with the Bears, and they want to see who the real Fuller is.

. He came back in 2017 and had another solid season, rehabbing his value. Fuller then seemingly had a falling-out with the Bears, who declined his fifth-year option. He started 30 games in his first two seasons out of Virginia Tech and had six interceptions and 129 tackles.
