In a survey of 511 users, Loup Ventures found 226 iPhone users, out of which 22 percent people are planning to upgrade to a new iPhone 2018 model slated to launch this September.

While the iPhone X managed to snag the title of fastest selling iPhone in history, it actually underperformed Apple's lofty sales expectations.

The report further claimed Apple purchased fewer OLED panels from Samsung Display than it had earlier committed due to the weak demand for the iPhone X. This resulted in Apple's South Korean panel supplier to "bargain more chips" in its negotiation for manufacturing OLED panels for the upcoming iPhones. This could mean that out of the three iPhone's being launched, this one might be the affordable one.

Phone manufacturers tweak screens to their specifications, and Apple has for years calibrated iPhone screens for color accuracy, but this marks the first time Apple is designing screens end-to-end itself.

Luke Lin, senior analyst at Digitimes Research has revealed that Apple will be launching a new 5.85-inch iPhone with OLED display this year.

Apple is rumored to be kicking off trial production of its three anticipated 2018 iPhone models in late Q2 2018, a bit earlier than previous year. In that case, the premium would likely be justifiable since Apple would be delivering much more value in the form of a larger device for roughly the same price as the current iPhone X.

Currently, the original iPhone X's manufacturing bill of materials (MBOM) supposedly costs Apple $400, minus distribution, marketing and the likes. However, the project was suspended in mid-February and must have been eventually terminated later on.

Apple will be looking to launch two OLED panel iPhones of screen sizes 5.8-inch and 6.3-inch along with a 6.1-inch LCD panel iPhone. It is unlikely that the technology will reach an iPhone for at least three to five years as MicroLED screens are more hard to produce than the current displays, Bloomberg said. Then again, it won't be a true successor of the iPhone X.

Apple had also reportedly been working on MicroLED display technology at an R&D center in Taiwan but late a year ago it was reported that efforts had been scaled back at the center.

Meanwhile, Apple is also reportedly working on its own MicroLED displays that would consume less power and help reduce the production costs of the iPhone. If Apple were to pass on that savings to customers, the next iPhone X could cost about $900 instead of $999.
