Venus Williams gives USA 1-0 lead over Netherlands in Fed Cup

That will be Williams' first competitive outing since winning the 2017 Australian Open final, with the 23-time Grand Slam champion having given birth to daughter Alexis Olympia on September 1.

Williams won't be playing in either of Saturday's Fed Cup singles matches as she makes her comeback five months after becoming a mother.

With yet another break in hand, Williams served for the tie up 5-1, and had a drama-free hold to give the United States a 3-0 win over the Netherlands to make the Fed Cup semifinals.

Hogenkamp won four consecutive games to take the opener but Vandeweghe levelled the match with an ace on her fourth set point, triggering a massive fist pump and show of emotion that few expected from what initially appeared to be a mismatch.

"It's a great opportunity to get, I mean, a new set of eyes on what I've been doing with Kathy", Williams told reporters after the draw ceremony where it was determined she would play with world number 62 Lauren Davis.

In the other three World Group matches being played this weekend, last year's beaten finalists Belarus stand at 1-1 with Germany, and France and Belgium are also at 1-1.

The big-hitting Czech player put her opponent under pressure with aggressive strokes on the indoor hard court at Prague's O2 Arena, breaking serve twice in the opening set.

After the match, Venus said "Honestly, I like to think that CoCo wore her [Hogenkamp] down some yesterday".

Serena's sister Venus Williams and CoCo Vandeweghe are set to contest the singles rubbers for the US.

Demi Schuurs is world No 32 in doubles and her experience helped the Netherlands to seal at least a win, a consolation prize as the Usa clinched the seventh victory in nine meetings between the two nations.

The elder sister struggled to hold serve, getting broken in all but one of her service games as she seemed to lack some of the energy she had earlier in singles action. Her only Fed Cup singles losses came in 1999 to Russia's Elena Dementieva and in 2005 to Russia's Anastasia Myskina.

After holding serve in the second game of the match, Rus wouldn't win her serve again until she already had lost the first set and was down a break in the second. "She's not beating me in long rallies, so let's just run and grind and see what happens".

Last year, US won the Fed Cup title for the 18th time, and the first since 2000, extending its record for most Fed Cup titles.

Serena, 36, hasn't played an official match since winning the 2017 Australian Open.

The 36-year-old has not competed in a Fed Cup tie since April 2015 but felt the event was as good as any to start her comeback under the leadership of US captain Kathy Rinaldi.

In La Roche sur Yon, France, like Germany two-time winners of the Fed Cup, fought back to 1-1 against Belgium.
