Trump Backs Arming Teachers During Emotional White House Listening Session

Students galvanized by the deadly mass shooting at a Florida high school confronted lawmakers on Wednesday with demands to restrict sales of assault rifles, while President Donald Trump suggested arming teachers as a way to stop more USA rampages.

Donald Trump doubled down on his proposal to address school shootings by giving some teachers guns on Thursday, tweeting that it would be a "great deterrent" to killers.

Trump said on Twitter, "I will be strongly pushing Comprehensive Background Checks with an emphasis on Mental Health". I want certain highly adept people - people that understand weaponry, people that understand guns, if they really have that aptitude.

Trump said he'd prefer a "hardened school" where teachers with training or a military background carry weapons.

In the listening session, he suggested that 20 per cent of the teaching staff in school across America could be given "concealed carry" permits, which allow people to carry firearms hidden from view.

"A gun-free zone is, let's go in and let's attack", he said.

It emerged after the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland that there was an armed security guard on site, but he did not get the chance to engage the gunman, Nikolas Cruz, on the sprawling campus. I don't want to tell my son 'you're going to have to participate in an active shooter drill. I want it to sink in.

Cruz's attacked lasted for only minutes before he slipped out of the school as his former classmates evacuated.

"I don't understand. I turned 18 the day after (the shooting)".

Add that to your school supplies list, educators. So let's be strong for the fallen who don't have a voice to speak anymore, and let's never let this happen again. "Too many instances, and were going to get it done". "There needs to be significant change in this country because this has to never happen again and people should be able to feel that when they go to school". The NRA today announced it opposes raising the age limit.

President Donald Trump's speech to survivors of the Parkland school shooting on Wednesday appeared to contradict an earlier claim he made on gun reform during his 2016 presidential campaign. One father, whose daughter was murdered at Columbine, suggested the administration and schools focus on relatedness in order to heal communities. "If I have to, I'm gonna try and perhaps override the states".
