New program helps SNAP recipients gain financial independence

New program helps SNAP recipients gain financial independence

Comparing the new proposal to Blue Apron, an American ingredient-and-recipe meal kit service, founded in 2012, the delivered food boxes would include "shelf-stable" items such as juice, pasta, ready to eat cereal, canned meat, pasta, peanut butter and beans.

"What's the process for matching, if I go on Amazon and order food like you and I - I can pick out what I want, I have some options.not everyone has availability to the internet, what's the system behind that?" said President Herbert Smith.

In the biggest shakeup of the decades-old food stamp program, the Trump administration proposed on Monday to substitute part of the monthly cash payments with "100 percent American grown food" given to recipients. The administration wants states to focus on long-term employment for SNAP participants to get them off of the benefit. And the food would not necessarily be delivered to people's homes, according to a fact sheet from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which oversees food stamps.

Currently, SNAP gives 42 million Americans a food voucher averaging $125 per person that can be redeemed for nearly any food product in a grocery store.

Mulvaney claimed that the change would allow the government to save almost $130 billion over 10 years, as it would lower government costs because it could buy the products at wholesale prices.

President Donald Trump's budget proposal calls for funding cuts that have the Iowa agencies responsible for feeding the hungry feeling concerned.

Possible changes coming to SNAP
Food bank says proposed SNAP changes would make program more expensive

The Food Research and Action Center, a prominent non-profit group, told Politico the harvest box idea would be "costly, inefficient, stigmatizing, and prone to failure".

If Congress agrees with these cuts and program changes, food assistance will arrive with a stigma not witnessed since the depression era, with the ability to devastate local economies. The food bank says they would feel the immediate domino effect of this cut.

Instead of fresh fruits and vegetables, the program would prioritize canned goods. "That helps millions of people every year get the nutrition they need". Combined with other proposed changes to the program, the changes would shrink SNAP's budget by $213 billion over the same amount of time, a 30% reduction.

"It's taking away client choice and pushing the distribution cost onto state and local governments and the not-for-profit sector when they can not afford it", added Calvert.

"It would impact our store in particular...sales-wise, especially on those food stamp days", said Dorsch.
