Muslim Board rejects compromise on Babri Masjid

The case will now come up for hearing on March 14.

The Supreme Court began the final hearings on Thursday on the politically sensitive Ram Janmabhumi - Babri Masjid case of Ayodhya. A three-judge bench led by Chief Justice Dipak Misra said that the apex court would not be swayed by the history of the religious conflict and the violence associated with it.

"We have never turned down any offer for talks from Hindu parties to the dispute but always requested that the offer for mutual settlement should be just and practical".

Also, they demanded that the case be referred to a five-judge Constitution bench.

Bengaluru, Feb 8 Renewing his mediation efforts on the Babri Masjid-Ram Janmabhoomi dispute in Ayodhya, Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar today held a meeting here with Muslim leaders, including members from the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and Sunni Waqf Board.

The Bench chose to keep pending all intervention applications filed by those who were not parties to the dispute before the Allahabad High Court.

Additional Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Uttar Pradesh Government, told the Bench that 504 exhibits, including scriptures such as the Ram Charit Manas and the Bhagavad Gita, their excerpts and 87 depositions along with the translations had been filed. As the parties will be relying on the same, the Bench appointed two counsels to translate the texts - its first page and the portion being relied upon by each party, and file it in the Supreme Court Registry in two weeks.

Hinting at a peaceful solution to the Ram temple dispute, Maulana Salman Nadwi said, "Islam allows you to shift a masjid (mosque) to another site, Ram Mandir should be constructed in Ayodhya to set an example of communal harmony".

The bench gave all parties time until March 14 - the next date of hearing - for submission all relevant data required for the progress of the title dispute case.

"At least 700 cases involving ordinary citizens can be disposed of in 25 days if the court deals with them for about an hour-and-a-half", Justice Misra said. "Many Muslim stakeholders are cooperating in this matter", an AOL statement said.
