FDA approves first blood test for concussion

The Food and Drug Administration approved a blood test Wednesday that it says can help diagnose concussions more quickly, without the need for X-rays. Where a CT scan can cost $800 to $1,500, Nordhoff predicts that the new test would cost closer to $150. But many people who have such a scan do not have brain lesions that are detectable, the FDA said Wednesday in a news release.

"Helping to deliver innovative testing technologies that minimize health impacts to patients while still providing accurate and reliable results to inform appropriate evaluation and treatment is an FDA priority". The NFL and other professional and amateur sports organizations are attempting to get out in front of the issue by launching new initiatives to detect when a player has suffered a concussion, and then prevent that player from participating until they are cleared. Banyan says that measuring the levels of the two brain proteins can help clinicians determine whether or not to proceed with a CT scan. Additionally, by sparing some patients CT scans, it would reduce the radiation exposure associated with those scans.

"A blood test that accurately, reliably and consistently detects the presence of brain proteins that appear in the blood after a brain injury is a major advance", said Dr. David Dodick, a fellow of the American Academy of Neurology who specializes in sports medicine and neurology. The FDA reviewed the product's performance by comparing blood test results with CT scan results.

Thus, Banyan Biometrics was hired to develop such a blood test and all the expenses with the development and clinical trials were supported by the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command.

At present, medical professional use Cat scans, which expose patients to radiation, to test for concussions and other brain injuries.

Almost 2.8 million people visited US emergency rooms in 2013 because of concussion or other traumatic brain injuries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Its developers, Banyan Biometrics scientists, stated that their blood test can diagnose concussions within 12 hours after the injury occurred.

Both the general public and members of the military stand to benefit, according to the FDA.

That prize would be a test that could detect and guide treatment for concussions and traumatic brain injuries, similar to a blood test that hospitals commonly use to evaluate suspected heart attacks, Koroshetz said.
