EasyJet CEO cuts salary to match female predecessor

EasyJet CEO cuts salary to match female predecessor

The move came as the company revealed a huge gender pay gap which it has attributed to having mostly male pilots.

Mr Lundgren requested that his £740,000 salary is reduced to match that of his predecessor, Dame Carolyn McCall, who earned £706,000 when she left the airline in November.

"To show my personal commitment, I have asked the Board to reduce my pay to match that of Carolyn's when she was at EasyJet", Lundgren said in a statement, adding, "I also want to affirm my own commitment to address [ing] the gender imbalance in our pilot community, which drives our overall gender pay gap".

EasyJet stresses that Lundgren's benefits aside from pay already matched those received by McCall.

ITV said that performance reviews mean her overall earnings potential over a three to five-year period was greater than that of her predecessor.

Lundgren, who joined the United Kingdom budget airline in December, will have his annual salary cut by £34,000 ($48,000) down to £706,000 ($994,000) - the amount his female predecessor, Carolyn McCall, made in her final year according to easyJet.

EasyJet says they are recruiting more female pilots, and hope that by 2020 20 percent will be women.

EasyJet said on average, male employees earned twice as much as women but that was driven by the fact that 94% of its pilots were men. It has a large wage gap of 51.7%.

This gender imbalance is an issue for the whole aviation industry. At EasyJet (ESYJY), the share of female pilots is just 5%.

But the company said: "We recognize we need to do better". A target that 20 per cent of new pilots should be female by 2020 was set, up from 6 per cent in 2015. Previous year it recruited 49 female pilots.

McCall had been credited with transforming the airline and was making £706,000 when she left the carrier last November after eight years in the job, so that's a cut of almost five per cent and A$60,000.
