Woman Dies Of Flesh-Eating Bacteria From Raw Oysters

These marine animals can contract different viruses which could be deadly to people. She developed a fatal condition after eating raw oysters.

The woman, Jeanette LeBlanc, went crabbing with her friends and family on the coast of Louisiana in September, according to CBS News. During the trip, she grabbed about two-dozen raw oysters at a nearby market and got sick shortly after eating them.

Underscoring the seriousness of the flesh eating disease, also known by its scientific name, necrotising fasciitis, a report via the dailymail describes the malignancy as a rare but serious bacterial infection that can destroy the skin, fat, and the tissue covering the muscles within a very short time if left untreated. Her family recalls that she was "bigger than life", a deeply caring person that loved her family and used to laugh a lot.

Bowers added, according to the television station, that it first appeared to be "an allergic reaction of sorts, that's what I would call it".

Other bacteria can cause flesh-eating disease as well - in fact, Vibrio bacteria are far less likely to cause these infections than group A Streptococcus bacteria and some other types.

The common Vibrio bacteria occur naturally in warm coastal waters, such as the Gulf of Mexico. About one in every four people with severe Vibrio bacteria infection dies from the illness within a day or two of contracting the bacteria.

Approximately 80,000 illnesses and a hundred deaths annually are caused by Vibrio bacteria in the United States. From these, around 100 result in death.

Typical symptoms of vibriosis include diarrhea, nausea, fever, and chills. Most people don't last, ' Karen told KLFY.
