Sisi's re-election campaign say submitted 173000 citizen endorsements to Egypt elections authority

An hour before the deadline for candidates nominations, the Ghad Party leader, Moussa Mostafa Moussa, presented his candidacy documents for Egypt's presidential elections to the NEA, including what he said were 47,000 citizens' endorsements and 26 endorsements from members of parliament.

Several leading opposition figures called for a boycott on Sunday, of the March election, citing a wave of repression that has cleared the field of challengers to Sisi and left his top opponent in jail.

El-Sissi, a former military commander, was elected in 2014, a year after leading the military to topple the divisive but freely-elected President Mohamed Morsi.

Barring a last-minute submission, it will be a one-horse race, similar to other presidential elections in the decades before the 2011 revolt, which toppled long-time autocrat Hosny Mubarak.

Despite this, Egypt's electoral commission has insisted it will ensure March's vote is fair and transparent. Presidential hopefuls must collect endorsements from at least 20 lawmakers, or at least 25,000 registered voters, with a minimum of 1,000 signatures from each of at least 15 provinces.

Sisi's campaign said on Monday it had received nomination pledges from 915,000 citizens.

Mary Lou McDonald to succeed Gerry Adams as Sinn Fein leader
McDonald, who's now deputy leader, has been a member of the lower house of the Irish parliament since 2011. "The truth is, and so many of you have said to me quite correctly "you have very big shoes to fill".

Other candidates who have either withdrawn from the race or been forced by authorities to do so include rights lawyer Khaled Ali, ex-army Chief of Staff Sami Anan, former Prime Minister Ahmed Shafiq, MP and Zamalek sports club head Mortada Mansour, and army colonel Ahmed Konsawa.

It appears a contender has finally emerged to take on President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in Egyptian presidential polls slated for March.

The military arrested Annan last week, accusing him of incitement against the military and forgery.

A runoff vote will be held in April if no candidate receives more than 50 percent support in the first round.

Members of Anan's campaign, former Islamist presidential candidate Abdel Moneim Abol Foutoh, and Mohamed Anwar Sadat, who halted his own presidential bid this month, called for the election to be suspended and said state policies were "removing any opportunity for the peaceful transfer of power".

Mousa said he will convene a press conference on Monday at 6 the al-Ghad Party headquarters where the details of his candidacy and election platform will be announced.
