Police seize cocaine found hidden in pineapples

The investigation continues in Portugal and Spain with the cooperation of the authorities in other countries.

Spanish and Portuguese police have seized cocaine worth about £33 million that was hidden inside fresh pineapples from Latin America.

The bust was part of an investigation that spanned almost a year and led to the arrest of nine members of an global drug ring, police believe. A press release from the Spanish Interior Ministry stated that the cocaine was covered in a yellow wax to resemble the inside of the fruit even when it was cut open.

The gang members, led by two Colombian brothers, had laboratories in the municipalities of Pinto and Nuevo Baztan near the Spanish capital Madrid. Apparently, the gang had the cocaine stored in Terrassa, Barcelona and transported it to Madrid laboratories every 15-20 days.
