Gay Couples Legally Marry At Midnight In Australia

The Australian Parliament overwhelming voted for same-sex marriage after a nationwide postal survey that found in November that 62 percent of respondents wanted marriage equality.

Atfer voting a resounding "yes" in the postal vote survey in November previous year, the history-making law allowing same-sex couples to legally marry in Australia passed one month ago, but today is the first day same-sex couples can be Wednesday. With this, Australia became the 26th nation to have legalized same-sex marriages.

Burns and Sullivan, who's also a track athlete, have turned their wedding on its head - it'll start with a reception garden party on Monday at 8pm leading up to the official ceremony from 11.30pm.

Another couple to tie the knot today was Roz Kitschke and Lainey Carmichael who got married in Hobart, Tasmania.

In the port city of Perth in Western Australia, Gillian Brady and Lisa Goldsmith signed their marriage certificate at a ceremony at the Court Hotel. In celebration of the historic event, festival organizers threw a public "rainbow wedding reception" in the park's Meriton Festival Village complete with music, cake, champagne and pink swimming pools.

Melbourne couple Ron Van Houwelingen, 50, and Antony McManus, 53, said no country should ever have to go through what Australia did to legalise gay marriage, calling it "horrendous".

Their wedding cake was topped with a symbol of their love.

"It's been quite hectic trying to organise that in such a short amount of time". But the NSW Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages confirmed it would marry a female couple at its Parramatta office on Tuesday.

Same-sex couples across Australia are able to marry legally today for the first time. In May 2017, Taiwan's Constitutional Court ruled the current law unconstitutional and gave the country's legislature two years to change it or enact new laws.
