Do you think Chelsea need a player like Barkley?

Chelsea are reportedly "close to clinching" a deal to sign Everton midfielder Ross Barkley after they submitted a new offer for the England worldwide.

Chelsea have the option of waiting until the summer to try and pilfer Barkley for free, but Antonio Conte's side have instead chose to get ahead of Tottenham and any other interested parties by offering Everton a fee and concluding a deal this month.

Tottenham were heavily linked with a move for him during the summer and Spurs, according to The Mirror, are "confident" of signing him during the winter transfer window.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce had confirmed on Thursday that Barkley's departure from Merseyside is just a matter of when, not if.

Barkley has rejected a new deal at Everton, who he joined as an 11-year-old in 2005, with his current contract due to expire at the end of this season.

Barkley, 24, is yet to play a game this season because of a troublesome hamstring injury but that hasn't stopped Chelsea boss Antonio Conte.

That's paved the way for Barkley to secure his move to Stamford Bridge with the BBC claiming the midfielder will now undergo a medical with the defending Premier League champions today.

Conte wants more players to strengthen what he considers a "small" squad - especially with Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Premier League trophies still technically up for grabs.
