Regarding Garrison Keillor Programs on HPR

Garrison Keillor has confirmed to the Associated Press that he was sacked by Minnesota Public Radio over allegations of improper behavior.

Keillor, 75, who hosted Prairie Home for more than 40 years, alerted the an e-mail on Wednesday, saying that he was terminated over "a story that I think is more interesting and more complicated than the version M.P.R. heard". In a follow-up statement, he says he was sacked over "a story that I think is more interesting and more complicated than the version MPR heard".

In a statement, Minnesota Public Radio President John McTaggart says Garrison Keillor has been an important part of the growth and success of NPR, and all of us in the NPR community are saddened by these circumstances.

MPR also said it would end distribution of "The Writer's Almanac", Keillor's daily reading of a poem and telling of literary events, and end rebroadcasts of "The Best of A Prairie Home Companion" hosted by Keillor. MPR said the allegation stemmed from Keillor's conduct when he was producing and hosting "A Prairie Home Companion".

MPR is conducting an ongoing investigation of the allegations.

"I sent her an email of apology later and she replied that she had forgiven me and not to think about it", he added.

The allegation is a devastating blow for fans of public radio, many of whom know Keillor's deep voice as well as they know a family member's. Based on what we now know, there are no similar allegations involving other staff.

Keillor's books include "Lake Wobegon Days" and "Leaving Home: A Collection of Lake Wobegon Stories". His firing came one day after publications of a Washington Post column in which he argued against the idea that Minnesota Sen. He commented on Senator Al Franken, who who apologized this month after being accused of kissing and groping television personality Leeann Tweeden during a USO tour in 2006. MPR said there are presently no similar allegations involving other staff.

Keillor's firing came on the same day NBC announced Today Show co-host Matt Lauer was sacked after 20 years on the show, and amid a flurry of other sexual misconduct allegations in multiple industries, starting with fallen Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein.
