Qualcomm's powerful Snapdragon 845 chipset goes official

Equipping a laptop with mobile connectivity is not necessarily new - Intel has been doing it for years with their own modems (such as the XMM7260 and XMM7360), mostly in business end devices or Chromebooks.

Qualcomm today (Dec. 5) took the wraps off the Snapdragon 845, its next mobile platform that will no doubt power the next batch of flagship Android smartphones coming our way in 2018. HP, Asus, and Lenovo will all be launching laptops and convertibles with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 processor in them, with prices expected to range from $600 to $800.

There are now 238 million Xiaomi mobile phones powered by Qualcomm processors.

Yes, Xiaomi really, really likes Qualcomm.

The Snapdragon 845 is (wait for it!) a direct successor to the Snapdragon 835, which can be found lingering inside devices like the Galaxy S9, Galaxy Note 8, Pixel 2, and Moto Z2 Force. It's a safe bet that the next Snapdragon chip will find itself in numerous same premium phones. Tuesday marked the first time the chipmaker has publicly discussed the name of its new processor.

Being always connected wherever I am whether I am in the auto, airport or coffee shop, always being connected just feels like the most natural, safe and secure way to work with teams and be creative.

Earlier Tuesday, the company showed off the first 2-in-1 PCs that run Windows 10 and are powered by its Snapdragon mobile processor.

The new Envy x2 is nearly unrecognizable compared with its brushed-aluminum ancestor, which featured all-day battery life but a painfully slow Intel Atom processor when it debuted in 2013.
