Orrin Hatch grateful for 'honor' from Utah newspaper criticizing him

Toward the end, the paper called on Hatch to step aside as he prepared to run for an eighth term, despite telling voters in 2012 that he would give up his seat. "For good or for ill".

The Tribune attacked Hatch for supporting President Donald Trump's drastic reduction in the size of federally protected land in Utah's Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante monuments, which the Tribune argued had "no constitutional, legal or environmental logic".

The editorial said that Hatch was given the designation based on "his utter lack of integrity that rises from his unquenchable thirst for power", and told the longtime senator to "call it a career".

Hatch's retweet of the Tribune's front page - which did not capture any part of the editorial's text - set off a cascade of ridicule on social media from people who accused the senator of not reading it.

"Once again, Hatch has moved to freeze the field to make it nigh unto impossible for any number of would-be senators to so much as mount a credible challenge", the editorial board wrote.

The editors note that "after 42 years, [Hatch] is the longest-serving Republican senator in US history, that he has been a senator from Utah longer than three-fifths of the state's population has been alive". At the event, Trump invited members of Congress to speak, and when Hatch's turn came, he offered a glowing approval of the legislation - and the President.

During his decades in the Senate, Hatch has consistently voted with the right-most wing of the Republican Party on both social and economic issues.

The paper said now that Hatch, the chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, had helped shepherd through his long-sought goal of tax reform, he should announce he will not seek re-election.

"There's no question in my mind she was coached by special interest groups", Hatch said in 1991.

Prior to Clarence Thomas and the anti-apartheid vote, in his first decade in the Senate, Hatch offered advice to Capitol Hill interns in 1983. "Elected politicians shouldn't stay here too long".

Quite similar to the yearly confusion surrounding the choosing process behind TIME magazine's Person of the Year, the Salt Lake City Tribune attempted to explain that being designated Utahn of the Year is not inherently positive.
