Lakers celebrate Kobe Bryant, who didn't stick around for OT

As you all know, Kobe had both his No. 8 and No. 24 jerseys retired by the Lakers at halftime in their game against the Golden State Warriors on Monday, and in usual Kobe fashion, Los Angeles was buzzing in excitement for the ceremony.

President Barack Obama holds a personalized team jersey presented to him by Los Angeles Lakers guards Kobe Bryant and Derek Fisher during a ceremony honoring the 2009 NBA basketball champions, January 25, 2010.

Bryant and his family exited the Staples Center seconds after Kentavious Caldwell-Pope's potential game-winner flew wide right, sending the game with the Warriors to an extra five minutes. That probably had a lot to do with him needing to get his kids home at a reasonable time, but Twitter couldn't get enough of the fact that Kobe left and the Lakers lost by two.

The game was merely the side attraction on a night Bryant was celebrated by the Lakers organization.

So while the argument over his jersey numbers, like much else with Bryant, is not an easy one to settle, Monday wasn't about debate. "For 20 years, you thrilled us and made us scratch our heads and say, 'What we did we just see?" He entered the league in 1996 wearing No. 8 before switching in 2006 to No. 24.

Bryant even scored nearly the same number of points in No. 8 (16,777) as he did in No. 24 (16,866). He also won three National Basketball Association titles with his first number. I got a gift for you for your last game.' And she proceeded to show me the row of retired jerseys from Baylor, from Magic, from Shaq, from Cap, all with personal messages signed to me, including from Michael Jordan, including from the great Bill Russell, including from the great Larry Byrd. "We are retiring both your numbers because if you separated each of the accomplishments under those numbers, each of those players would qualify for the Hall of Fame". "If 8 is playing 24 after he just ruptured his Achilles, that's a problem for 24". "I think legacy is really important, in a sense of what we've done is awesome".

And what does Conway want for Christmas? "I will always remember that one time I heard him talk", Johansson continued. Trump asked Ivanka, referring to husband Jared Kushner. "I brought you a brand-new ornament: Roy Moore".

This all led to the moment of Bryant's jerseys were then unveiled slowly next to legendary play-by-play announcer Chick Hearns' jersey up in the rafters. Bryant isn't eligible until 2021, but the Lakers decided not to wait for that formality - and for Kobe, they doubled up the honor.

"It's not about my jerseys that are hanging up there for me", Bryant said.

"The man sacrificed everything to be as good as he was, to have the career he had", Walton said.

In the hours before his double jersey retirement, the notoriously insatiable Bryant revealed that he has already given some thought to another inevitable honor: a statue outside Staples Center that would stand next to existing monuments to O'Neal, Johnson, Abdul-Jabbar, West and other LA sports legends. O'Neal, who teamed with Bryant to win three consecutive titles from 2000 to 2002 before being traded to the Heat, hailed Bryant's supreme self-confidence and said that their love-hate pairing "was fun while it lasted".

"There will never be another Kobe Bryant", Magic Johnson said.
