Exit polls boost markets; all eyes on final outcome

Exit polls boost markets; all eyes on final outcome

According to exit polls, GST and demonetisation did not affect BJP's chances in urban areas as the party is predicted to win 42 out of the 55 seats of urban Gujarat.

The Times Now-VMR exit poll predicted the BJP to win 113 and the Congress 66 in Gujarat. The BJP is likely to get 50 per cent of the vote share, while the Congress would get 41 per cent and others would bag about nine per cent of the electorate. The Times Now-VMR poll gave 16 seats to the Congress and a seat to other contenders. In the big cities, such as Ahmedabad, Surat, Rajkot, Vadodara, despite the strong Patidar movement led by Hardik Patel, and the OBC-Dalit agitation driven by Alphesh Thakor and Jignesh Mevani, the cities seem to have stuck their necks out to retain the incumbent BJP. According to NewsX-CNX Exit Poll, 45% of voters went with the BJP this year, a sharp decline of -02.85% from 47.85% vote share in 2012.

Out of 35 seats in South Gujarat region, ABP News-CSDS exit poll predicted a clean sweep for BJP. The Congress is likely to improve its seats tally but will fall short of the magic number needed to win the Assembly election.

Incidentally, based on Thursday's exit polls the pricing in the betting market was vying on 92-94 seats for BJP and 90-92 seats for Congress. BJP president Amit Shah had in a speech told BJP MLAs and workers not to burst crackers if they do not achieve the target of 150 plus seats.

However, about 27 seats remain extremely critical and a swing of 1-2 per cent vote share can completely change the picture for the Congress party.
