Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose Dubai drama

Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose Dubai drama

Englishman Rose, victor of the Race to Dubai in 2007 and trailing Fleetwood coming into this week, needed to make an eagle putt on the 18th hole, but his effort from off the green slid past the cup, thus handing the European No.1 honour to his 27-year-old compatriot.

On a day when Race to Dubai leader Tommy Fleetwood revived his hopes of claiming the money title with a second-round 65, Dunne was frustrated on the greens all day before a closing eagle left him just three shots behind leader and defending champion Matt Fitzpatrick on seven-under par at halfway.

Despite a fine second shot from the rough, Rose had to settle for a birdie and therefore ended the tournament in a four-way share of fourth as Rahm triumphed by one stroke from Shane Lowry and Kiradech Aphibarnrat.

Rose was joint fourth at 271 with Masters champion Sergio Garcia (65) and the South African duo of Dylan Frittelli (69) and Dean Burmester (68).

Having come through a rollercoaster of emotions over the last month in which he saw his huge Race to Dubai lead whittled down to less than 135,000 points when Rose won back-to-back in China and Turkey, Fleetwood is now looking to break into the world's top 10 and higher over the next year.

"If I slip up tomorrow, he's (Fleetwood) right there". The emotions were hard on me because I don't trust computers, so even when everything had finished, it was so hard to get up or down.

"It's the biggest day of my career for sure". I don't know whether Justin will be bothered or not.

An emotional Fleetwood said: "It's awesome". I think how gracious he was shows a lot about his character.

"I thought I played as good tee to green as I have all year".

Rose was disappointed with his finish, but delighted for Fleetwood. I can't even count the number of chances I missed inside 10 feet, I reckon there were at least eight or nine.

"I just feel I went a bit flat around the turn".
