Sen. Rand Paul assaulted at his home; suspect arrested

Police released few details about the assault or what led to the confrontation between Paul and the 59-year-old suspect arrested in the incident.

A man was arrested and charged with assaulting and injuring Rand Paul, the Republican senator from Kentucky, at his home on Friday afternoon. "Senator Paul is fine", his office said in a released statement on Saturday.

Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault, CNN reports.

The KSP news release said troopers were called to the Paul residence at 3:21 p.m. Friday.

Kelsey Cooper, Paul's Kentucky-based communications director, said in a statement Saturday that the senator "was blindsided and the victim of an assault".

Rene Boucher was booked into Warren County Regional Jail on fourth-degree assault charges, according to booking records. His next court date has been set for November 9, the website said.

The doctor is a registered Democrat and has frequently posted on his Facebook page about politically polarizing issues, writes Fox News.

Investigations into the reasoning behind Paul's assault are still underway.
