School lockdown stopped gunman from entering classrooms, killing more

At least 10 other people were wounded, including two children at an elementary school near the small town of Corning, about 100 miles (160 km) north of Sacramento, where the suspect was slain, according to police and local media.

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents are seen behind yellow crime scene tape outside Rancho Tehama Elementary School. Fitzpatrick said the boy was crouched under a classroom table during the shooting. No students or staff were killed, said Superintendent Rich DuVarney of the county education department.

A person with the username Javier Figueroa tweeted that the shooting had taken place at his brother's school.

"The school was able to go on lockdown very quickly and effectively, which prevented any further injury or violence".

That's when Fitzpatrick said the hero custodian went into action.

The gunman sprayed the school with bullets.

The alleged assailant was killed by "law enforcement bullets" after opening fire, Assistant Sheriff Phil Johnston told reporters.

Children outside on the playground and parents dropping off their children were whisked into classrooms and offices.

Oil steady, tempered by caution over rising USA output
But analysts expect the price to not rise much further in coming months as the United States ramps up production. The International Energy Agency on Tuesday delivered a more cautious outlook for oil demand.

"At that time the head custodian, who was shepherding students into the classroom, poked his head around the building, saw the (shooter) and drew his attention". The school was only two-thirds of the way toward a complete lockdown when the gunman crashed a pickup through a fence and gate, jumped out and ran onto campus with a rifle.

If not more sheriffs' patrols, then the homeowners' association should consider paying for armed private patrols from the $50 monthly dues paid by every property owner or consider mounting an armed citizens' patrol, Raul Pinero said.

"There was something going on with the loading process of the weapon", Fitzpatrick said. A second child and a female adult were shot in a truck, authorities said. "That amount of seconds was critical".

It's unclear when during the shooting spree the almost 2-minute video was captured.

Neal left after about six minutes of trying to open locked doors and firing into windows and walls. He fired again then went inside an unlocked bathroom, but no one was inside.

Neal was shot and killed by police after he drove away from the school on Rancho Tehama Road. The staff at the school did an excellent job enacting a lockdown.

Johnston said Neal had shot his wife sometime late Monday, cut a hole in his floor and hid her body there. The school about 20 miles northwest of Corning is closed the rest of this week and Thanksgiving vacation is next week.

"This was an administrator's nightmare". But when he could not get inside, he appeared frustrated and moved on, Johnston said.
