Oxford Street Tube station closed by armed police

Oxford Circus station in London has been evacuated because of an "incident", police said.

Police had received multiple reports of shots fired at 4:38 p.m. (11:38 a.m. ET) on Oxford Street and at the Oxford Circus underground train station.

The police had earlier said that given the nature of the reports, they had responded as if the incident is "terrorist related". "If you sought shelter in a building please now leave, and follow the direction of police officers on the ground if you need assistance", the force said on Twitter. Shortly afterwards the Metropolitan Police also took similar calls. They gave no details on what happened, but crowds were seen running down Oxford Street, a shopping strip usually busy with pedestrians and heavy traffic.

He added: "The police service acted extremely quickly and efficiently to secure and lockdown the area, demonstrating how incredibly well prepared they are to respond". Nearby Bond Street Station has also been closed due to overcrowding.

The reports sparked panic in the area around one of London's busiest subway stations.

The attacks killed 35 people and wounded dozens more. "The station is now closed, please avoid the area at this time".
