New Book Claims Bushes Had Harsh Words For Trump

Those stinging comments mark the first time the former presidents are speaking out about Trump in such stark terms, as part of a new book about the father and son by historian Mark Updegrove, titled "The Last Republicans".

"I don't like him. I don't know much about him, but I know he's a blowhard", said Bush, now 93.

Updegrove got the title from a comment by the younger Bush during the 2016 election, "I'm anxious that I will be the last Republican president". But Updegrove told the Times that the remark seemed to carry a double meaning because the values of both Bushes and former President Ronald Reagan "are very much in contrast to the values of the Republican Party today, in particular the platform that Donald Trump ran on, which is essentially protectionism and a certain xenophobia".

The younger Bush, who also did not vote for his party's nominee but opted for "none of the above" on the ballot, recently delivered a speech that seemed to be a stinging rebuke of Trump, though he never mentioned the president by name.

Former presidents George H.W. Bush and George W. Bush apparently had some harsh words for Donald Trump, according to a new book. "Interesting, won't last" was the reaction that George W. Bush had in those days, Mr Updegrove writes.

That inspired the title of the book - which will be published November 14 by HarperCollins - as a quote that seemed to carry a double meaning. "As you know from looking at my family, it is a certain heritage, that's what they expect, and we're not seeing that" in Trump.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders hit back at the former presidents in a statement.

The book's author spoke with George W. Bush as Trump was sewing up the Republican nomination.

Both men went on the record to give Updegrove their candid assessments of Trump, as well as their thoughts on the 2016 presidential election, CNN reported. Like his father, the son disregarded the advice. "Donald Trump is everything that the Bush family is not", Updegrove told CNN's Jamie Gangel. "I think his heart operation made a difference".

"I don't like him".

The younger Bush resented the implication that anyone was steering him.

"The American people voted to elect an outsider who is capable of implementing real, positive, and needed change - instead of a lifelong politician beholden to special interests", she said.

They "didn't make one fucking decision", he told Updegrove. "I understand the way the system works", he said.
