Microsoft Office finally comes to Chromebooks

Microsoft Office finally comes to Chromebooks

But we understand the Office Android apps will only be free to users with specific devices, while others will need to subscribe to Office 365 to take advantage of the apps.

It seems that day has finally come, as AndroidCentral reports that Microsoft's full Android Office Suite are now available for all Chromebooks. The apps were free to use for viewing and editing documents on phones if users signed in to their Microsoft account. They were able to confirm that Microsoft Office was able to download on the Play Store for all of the mentioned devices.

Most of the Microsoft apps are quite popular in the Google Play Store and as the Redmond giant is improving the Office suite with monthly updates, the new Office suite would be a hit among the Chromebook users. Users of the Samsung Chromebook Pro, Acer Chromebook 15, and Acer C771 have all reported seeing the app available for their devices. The arrival of Office is partly thanks to the appearance of the Play Store on Chromebooks.

Android app support arrived on Chromebooks well over a year ago although the rollout wasn't exactly universal. Unfortunately this was not the case and only a few models received Office Suite.

Chromebook users can already tap into cloud-based productivity services like Google Drive, which can convert Microsoft file formats. According to ExtremeTech, anyone who owns a Chromebook larger than 10.1 inches will have to pay for an Office 365 subscription in order to edit documents. This scenario works out as a win-win for Google and Microsoft, increasing adoption of both Chrome OS and Office.

Microsoft Office support for Chromebooks has until now been spotty at best.

Last year, Microsoft revealed that machines with a display at or below 10.1-inches would be classified as a "true mobile device".
