In poll times, Congress, BJP raise heat on Winter Session dates

Yesterday, Congress President Sonia Gandhi had accused the government of sabotaging the winter session of Parliament.

The BJP, however, rejected the Congress's tirade as a "chorus of baseless allegations" and insisted that previous governments, including the UPA, had also scheduled sessions after state polls as politicians were busy in campaign.

Jaitley had said in Rajkot that Parliament sessions were often rescheduled to ensure they did not overlap with elections, and claimed the Congress had done so too in the past.

"We are committed to hold Winter Session of Parliament and in the next couple of days we are going to have cabinet committee on Parliamentary Affairs and decide the dates", said Union Minister Ananth Kumar. However, the government is yet to finalise the dates for the sitting.

While the Constitution does not specify as to how many times Parliament must meet in a year, the gap between two sessions can not be longer than six months.
