Apple HomePod delayed until 2018

Apple HomePod delayed until 2018

Apple hasn't been shy about talking up HomePod's audiophile credentials, squeezing six tweeters and a long-throw woofer - each powered by its own, custom amplifier - into the squat cylindrical design.

The delay announced Friday means Apple's HomePod speaker won't be available in the US, United Kingdom and Australia until early next year.

"When HomePod comes out, you'll probably hear some great content from artists that are familiar and popular, and there's probably going to be some other special aspects as well", he said. The tech giant announced the speaker in June at its annual developer conference. This is speculation, of course - unless Apple provides more information, we may never know the reason behind the delay.

The speaker, which will house Apple's voice-controlled virtual assistant Siri and be used to stream music, had been scheduled to launch in December in the UK. Priced at $349, Apple is setting the bar high for the smart speaker as a higher-end sound system like Sonos. With a device like a smart speaker, which packages not only music but voice control and home automation into a single device, there's no shortage of places where hold-ups could be introduced.

It's unclear what has caused the delay, however it's likely that the hold-up has been caused within production.

HomePod is created to work with an Apple Music subscription and iPhone 5s and above running iOS 11.

In a statement to TechCrunch the company said... Siri hasn't been able to keep up with other assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant.
