Wings trade Sheahan, sign Athanasiou

He was originally drafted 21st overall by the Red Wings in 2010. It hasn't gotten any better this season, with Sheahan going without a point in eight games.

The Wings also had made Athanasiou a two-year offer for $1.9 million a season.

Andreas Athanasiou and the Detroit Red Wings have agreed to a 1-year contract. Sheahan is pointless so far this year but has a big opportunity with the Penguins.

Washington scored 10 goals in the first two games and managed 12 in five outings since with a 2-0 loss to Toronto at home Tuesday following an embarrassing 8-2 setback at Philadelphia. It takes time for players to find their stride in the National Hockey League, and while Athanasiou wasn't scoring goals or recording points every single game, anybody who's watched him play has seen what he's capable of. The two sides have been in a stalemate as Athanasiou has rejected offers by the Wings to sign the restricted free agent.

Athanasiou is now skating with a Swiss team as he waits out the situation and is believed to have offers from the KHL.

Sheahan is the newest Penguin after the Red Wings packaged him and a 2018 fifth-round draft pick for Scott Wilson and a 2018 third-round pick Saturday, Bob McKenzie of TSN reports.

"There is an incredibly high level of exasperation on both sides, from the Red Wings and Athanasiou". Puempel most likely will go straight to the Griffins while Wilson most likely will stay with the Red Wings.

Now that Athanasiou is under contract with the Red Wings it will be interesting to see if he can parlay his one-year deal into a successful campaign worthy of a long-term commitment with a significant raise next offseason.
