Virginia State Police Participate in 'Drive to Save Lives' for Traffic Safety

More than half of teen drivers wish they learned more about driving safely on ice, snow, or wet roads.

To help encourage teens and their families to buckle up, the National Organizations for Youth Safety (NOYS) has teamed up with the NHTSA and NSC to once again invite teens to the "Seat Belts Save Challenge", which is created to encourage increased seat belt use among teens. Michelin's "Coaching Your Teen Driver" effort provides a playbook full of tips, hands-on drills and tools that parents can use as a conversation starter to help teens master safe driving skills.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that nationwide in 2015, 1,972 drivers, age 15-18, were involved in fatal collision, resulting in 1,730 teen deaths nationwide. Roughly 60 percent of those fatal accidents involved a teen being distracted while behind the wheel; about a quarter involved teens who had been drinking. It includes a facilitator-led interactive presentation for parents and teens that focuses on the benefits of parental involvement when teens are preparing or actively learning to drive, and is supported by a comprehensive resource guide and companion website.

Teens are busier than ever -- studying, extracurricular activities, part-time jobs and spending time with friends are among the long list of things they do to fill their time. Drowsiness can impair your ability to drive just like alcohol. Make sure they're following the rules all the time and you do that by opening up a dialogue and having a good conversation with them.

This week marks Teen Driver Safety Week - a week dedicated to reminding teens of the important rules they need to follow in order to stay safe behind the wheel.
