Russian Federation 'worried about Spain,' hopes Catalan crisis will be resolved - Putin

MOSCOW-Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday told the new US ambassador to Moscow he hoped Washington would follow a policy of "noninterference" in the country's domestic affairs, amid the ongoing controversy over alleged Russian interference in the 2016 USA election.

"We are in favour of constructive, predicable and mutually beneficial cooperation".

Mr Huntsman had an up-and-down relationship with Mr Trump during last year's campaign.

Putin also expressed his nation's condolences to the US over the Las Vegas shooting on Sunday.

According to the U.S. Mission to the Russian Federation, Huntsman, the former governor of Utah and ambassador to China, is returning this week to the U.S. for consultations.

Huntsman has twice served as an ambassador.

Huntsman said during his confirmation hearing last week that there is "no question" Russian Federation interfered in the USA presidential race and that Moscow continues to "threaten stability" in Europe. This year marks 350 years since the first diplomatic relations between the two countries were established.

In response, the US suspended issuing nonimmigrant visas in Moscow for a week in August and stopped issuing visas at its consulates elsewhere in Russian Federation.

Relations between Moscow and Washington have deteriorated to their lowest point since the end of the Cold War, and have been marked by tit-for-tat retaliations that began with USA sanctions on Russian Federation for its annexation of Crimea and subsequent support for separatists in Eastern Ukraine.

Nevertheless, Putin referred to the "below-satisfactory" Russian-U.S. relations during Tuesday's ceremony.

Putin leads the polls ahead of Russia's presidential election next year, and should he confirm he is running, will likely win another six-year presidential term.
