O.J. Simpson released from prison after 9 years

Simpson could be freed as early as Sunday from prison in Nevada, where he has been held since 2008 for a botched robbery, but the time and place of his release remain secret, his plans largely unknown.

Simpson was released at 12:08 a.m. PDT from Lovelock Correctional Center in northern Nevada, state prisons spokeswoman Brooke Keast told The Associated Press. His good friend, Tom Scotto, lives in there and has said before that Simpson can stay with him. They would require he report to a parole office in person - not through mail - that he wear a monitoring bracelet, that he undergo frequent drug testing, and that his travel be restricted.

The Goldman family has resumed its pursuit of a now-free O.J. Simpson with renewed efforts to collect on at least $33.5 million in a civil jury verdict awarded against the former football player following the deaths of Ronald Goldman along with Simpson's estranged wife a decade ago. Sunday, Oct. 1, is the first day Simpson was eligible for release.

Just last week, Simpson's attorney claimed his client was looking forward to enjoying the "very simple pleasures" of life, such as eating steak and buying a new iPhone.

For now, Simpson has been approved to live at a home in the Las Vegas area, a Nevada parole official said, and can't leave the state without advance approval from his parole officer. Nonetheless, Justin and Sidney, his two children reside in Florida. Keast said the early morning release was best for Simpson, the staff and the community, and said it "had to be done for safety reasons".

Via the New York Post, Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a letter on Friday to the Florida Department of Corrections that urges the agency to tell Nevada that the Sunshine State doesn't want Simpson there.

O.J. Simpson watches his former defense attorney Yale Galanter testify during an evidentiary hearing in Clark County District Court on May 17, 2013 in Las Vegas, Nevada. The trial involving OJ Simpson at the time was known around the world.

"I'm in a vehicle for the last five hours, so how do I know how it feels to be out?" he said wrily.

"He's going to Florida", LaVergne said.

When asked where he was going, Simpson replied, "None of your business".

He told officials that leading a group of men into a 2007 armed confrontation was an error in judgment he would not repeat.

Simpson, a former National Football League star and actor, was acquitted of the murders, but was later found liable in a civil suit. He was acquitted the following year in Los Angeles in what was dubbed the "trial of the century".
