More than 120000 flee Bali's Mt Agung volcano

More than 120000 flee Bali's Mt Agung volcano

Residents living in the shadow of the simmering Mount Agung volcano on the idyllic Indonesian holiday island of Bali are reportedly refusing to evacuate despite fears that it could erupt at any time.

With a volcanic eruption nearly certain (the volcano alert was rapidly raised to the maximum level last weekend), Indonesian officials have urged visitors and villagers to flee the 7.5-mile exclusion zone.

The last time Mount Agung volcano erupted in Bali, a stream of molten lava flattened teenage Gusti Nyoman Dauh's home, while cascading ash, rocks and hot gas killed 1,600 of his neighbours.

The exodus from a menacing volcano on the Indonesian tourist island of Bali is nearing 100,000 people as hundreds of tremors from the mountain are recorded daily.

According to the disaster response team that is monitoring the situation, the total number of people who have been evacuated has increased to around 134,200. The more than 130,000 people who have fled are staying in community centers or other shelters in safer areas of the island.

Officials estimate there are at least 30,000 cows within a 12km radius of the mountain´s summit, and efforts to relocate them are ongoing.

Almost 300 people were all left injured, according to Indonesia's volcanology centre.

Volunteers have given out meals for evacuees at a camp for people displaced from homes near an increasingly active volcano on Indonesia's tourist island of Bali.

The mountain, which sits about 70 kilometers northeast of Kuta, is among more than 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia.

Data indicate that Mount Agung experienced over 1,000 small earthquakes this week.
