Liverpool record Champions League firsts with seven-goal mauling of Maribor

Premier League giants Liverpool tonight set a new club record during their hammering of Maribor in the Champions League. Denis Sme will miss Tuesday's match for Maribor, who now sit in last place on the league table. Two points from their opening two group matches was not what boss Jurgen Klopp would have expected, especially after surrendering a winning position late on at home to Sevilla in their opening game.

"It looks like Maribor didn't play well, but it was very hard to play against us today".

Salah praised his team-mates after the game, saying that bad luck was the reason behind their recent bad form in the Premier League.

Klopp intends to keep changes to a minimum but could give Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain his first Champions League start for the club. Maribor have won only one of their eight games against English opposition in all competitions (D2 L5), a 2-1 win against Wigan Athletic in the 2013/14 Europa League group stages. The side is in second place with 28 points through 12 games.

Maribor and Liverpool will play the reverse fixture on November 1, the next game of the group stage, at Anfield.

After a strong start to the season, things have only looked south for Liverpool.

Tuesday could be the night when Jurgen Klopp & co. finally break the duck as they visit Maribor.

Nathaniel Clyne meanwhile remains a long-term absentee with a back problem that saw him omitted for the club's Champions League squad list. The Slovenian side though, is an unknown quantity, something Liverpool will have to be wary about, and their defensive frailties are likely to come to the fore once again.
