Govt's to soon announce Bharatmala highway project worth 7 lakh crores

The project also entails constructing 6,000 km long inter corridor and feeder routes, 2,000 km of border and global connectivity roads, 5,000 km to be upgraded under the national corridor efficiency programme, 800 km of greenfield expressways, 10,000 km under the national highway development programme and 2,000 km of coastal and port connectivity roads.

India's 100,000km of national highways, which constitute just 2% of total road network in the country bearing 40% of the traffic. In the first phase, work will be completed between NH-1 and NH-8 while the second phase will connect NH-8 with NH-10 and NH-2.

On Tuesday, finance secretary Ashok Lavasa had noted that some government agencies had more appetite for spending, something that economic affairs secretary SC Garg had also said while announcing the possibility of higher capital expenditure by public sector companies and had gone to name NHAI as one of the entities planning to step up asset creating spend this year.

Gadkari said that the ministry is initiating a slew of measures to ensure expeditious implementation of the program.

The announcement comes barely few months after Union Minister Nitin Gadkari told PTI that an umbrella programme for roads - Bharatmala - will hit the ground soon subsuming all existing highway projects, including the flagship National Highways Development Project (NHDP). The government plans to improve road connectivity not just to coastal and border areas but also backward areas.

For projects not covered under the Bharatmala programme, Rs97,000 crore will be provided by the CRF and Rs59,000 crore will be provided as gross budgetary support. Bharatmala will integrate Bangladesh-Bhutan-Nepal and Myanmar-Thailand corridors to make a North-East hub of East Asia.

"Bharatmala will bring down logistics cost, impacting exports and investment", Gadkari said.

With this projects, India will have "world-class roads on par with the U.S. and Germany" and special emphasis has been accorded to providing quality roads on borders adjoining China and Pakistan, besides far-flung tribal areas.

Commenting upon the growth registered by the Indian ports, Gadkari said they will earn Rs60,000 crore profit in the current financial year. NHAI has AAA+ rating and it can raise more fund throw market borrowings.

Asked about land acquisition, Gadkari admitted that though it is "tough and complicated", it is not a problem for the Ministry as farmers and others were making a beeline to offer their land for the highway projects after enhanced compensation.

Under the Bharatmala Project, Rs 5.35 lakh crore will be spent to have 34,800 km of roads. Bharatmala Phase-I will be implemented over a five years period of i.e. 2017-18 to 2021-22. While further talking about it, he added, "Bharatmala will lead to significant improvements in road safety and save lives".
