5 teens plead not guilty in deadly rock throwing incident

Citing the seriousness of the crime, Judge William Crawford refused to grant bond to the defendants, who were arraigned in Genesee County District Court on second-degree murder and other charges in the death of Ken White, 32, of Mount Morris.

The second-degree murder charge carries up to life in prison. "For some senseless act for it to be just a rock".

White, who lived in Mount Morris Township, enjoyed sports, video games and the outdoors, according to an obituary, which said he was born in nearby Flint but lived in SC for most of his life.

Five teenagers have been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the case.

The Genesee County Sheriff's office said the driver told police had had to pass four other cars that had been disabled by rocks before he could stop to get help for White, who was hit in the face, head and chest.

White was engaged to be married and leaves behind a 5-year-old son.

At least 20 rocks were found on Interstate 75, including one weighing nearly 20lb, and at least four vehicles were damaged.

In coming to the decision on second-degree murder charges, Leyton said on Monday that MI law doesn't call for first-degree murder charges in this case.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton Monday charged five teens with second-degree murder for the death of a motorist killed October 18 by a piece of concrete dropped off an Interstate 75 overpass.

Four cars hit the rocks of the road, but one rock crashed through the windshield of the van Kenneth White was riding in.

"He keeps asking about his daddy", Amiee Cagle, White's fiancee, told CNN affiliate WJRT. But the incident that took White's life was no accident, authorities said. The van was travelling south on I-75 at about 70 miles per hour when it approached the Dodge Road overpass, where the concrete fell on the vehicle from the overpass.

Pickell did not say whether anyone was injured in that incident. "The young people are charged criminally, a young boy lost his father and all of the families are left grieving", said Pickell.

Cagle said she will try to forgive the teens for what they did.
