Mattis threatens 'massive' retaliation in escalating N.Korea dispute

Lassina Zerbo, the Executive Secretary of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO), says data from North Korea's nuclear test indicates that the country's nuclear program is "advancing rapidly".

On Setp. 4, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley asserted that the U.S. was prepared to take military action against North Korea if global sanctions did not deter the Kim regime.

Media reports say that the test was the most powerful of the six, but there is no official measurement yet of the force of the hydrogen weapon.

South Korea's President Moon called for the "strongest punishment" against North Korea, including new United Nations sanctions.

Back in January 2016, North Korea announced its first test of a hydrogen bomb, a major leap in its nuclear program that promptly drew worldwide condemnation.

"Mattis seems to be informing North Korea - and others - that the USA now has no plans to "annihilate" North Korea but that does not mean the United States lacks the capability to do so", director of intelligence John Grisafi said.

As he left a prayer service for Houston flood victims in Washington on Sunday morning, he was asked whether the USA would attack North Korea, responding: "We'll see".

He later floated the idea that the United States could halt all trade with nations that did not sever economic links with North Korea.

In one tweet he wrote: "South Korea is finding, as I have told them, that their talk of appeasement with North Korea will not work, they only understand one thing!"

Pilgrims were not given enough accommodation - Hajj Board
Saudi Arabia's Red Crescent said it had deployed 326 ambulances along the pilgrimage route to handle health emergencies. More than 100,000 security personnel have been mobilised to keep pilgrims safe, the Saudi interior ministry says.

"I did speak with the president", Mnuchin also said Sunday.

North Korea's hydrogen bomb test early Sunday setoff off a manmade quake near the test site.

Donald Trump's defense secretary has warned North Korea of a "massive military response" if they threaten the United States or any of its allies.

It comes after North Korea conducted its sixth nuclear test and claimed it had successfully developed a hydrogen bomb.

There was no immediate confirmation outside North Korea that the test involved a hydrogen bomb, or that it was small enough to be loaded onto a missile.

The Security Council is expected to meet on Monday morning to address the matter. North Korea has made similar, unsubstantiated claims after some of its previous tests.

North Korea has previously conducted nuclear tests in 2006, 2009, 2013, and two in 2016, with explosive yields of less than one kiloton, 2-4 kilotons, 6-9 kilotons, 7-10 kilotons, and 20-30 kilotons, respectively.

The weapon tested last night was a fusion bomb, also called a hydrogen bomb or thermonuclear weapon. "We will not give up our goal of working together with allies to seek a peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

In short, the hydrogen bomb is a completely different and altogether more frightening prospect and it would put North Korea into an exclusive club of only five other countries: the US, UK, China, France and Russian Federation. Earlier in the day, the party's newspaper ran a front-page story showing photos of Kim examining what it said was a nuclear warhead being fitted onto the nose of an intercontinental ballistic missile.
