Chelsea agree £57m deal with Atletico Madrid for Diego Costa transfer

Chelsea and Atletico Madrid announced Thursday that they had reached an initial agreement that would see Diego Costa return to the La Liga club.

Chelsea have finally agreed a deal to send wantaway striker Diego Costa back to Atletico Madrid.

He scored 58 goals in 120 appearances for the Blues, including 20 in the Premier League last season as Chelsea won the title.

With the Madrid club, from whom Costa had moved for £32m in 2014, under a transfer ban until January, a summer transfer was mainly in the interests of Chelsea and not Atletico.

Costa initially said the transfer to Atletico was complicated because of the ban, which would keep him from playing and could affect his chances of making Spain ahead of next year's World Cup in Russian Federation.

With the European transfer window closed and Atletico banned from registering new players until 2018 for breaching Federation Internationale de Football Association rules, Costa will be unable to play for Atletico until 2 January. He's getting what he wants and going back to Atletico Madrid. Conte says: "I hope with this game to finish the speculation about him, about Chelsea, about me and him". The agreement is pending the approval of the contract between our club and the Spain worldwide player.

Atletico face Chelsea in the Champions League next Wednesday.

Costa finished as Chelsea's top scorer for each of his three seasons in London, but while his contribution on the field was huge his time at Stamford Bridge has not always been harmonious.

The striker stated this summer his wish to return to Atletico, and said Chelsea were treating him like "a criminal" by demanding an "impossible fee".
