Backers of Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) chanted slogans, threw rose petals and waved posters of the former prime minister as they lined the roads and trailed his motorcade.

On Monday, a bomb blast ripped through the route Sharif was earlier planned to take in Lahore, killing two people.

The court announced its verdict in connection with the Panama Papers case.

"Dictators rule the country for 10 years but a Prime Minister can not even complete his tenure".

Sharif said his legal experts will soon file a review petition against the July 28 Supreme Court order that ousted him from power for concealing assets — specifically, that his son's Dubai-based company listed a monthly salary for him. Sharif, in recent meetings with party leaders, lawyers and the media, has expressed his displeasure over the court rulings.

He also prayed for the well-being of his brother and the participants of the party's rally as well. "When will the people's mandate be respected?"

Referring to the security situation in Pakistan, Sharif said he had brought peace to Karachi and Balochistan. "I am going home and I do not want you to get me restored".

The march is taking place amid tight security, with large numbers of police officers and paramilitary soldiers deployed both in Islamabad and along the Grand Trunk Road, the main highway connecting the capital with Lahore.

Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) through the notice told the PML-N that Mr Sharif can not lead the party after disqualification under the Political Parties Order 2002.

"I'm selling sunglasses here because wearing these makes you look like a big leader, or a politician, and people seem to like that", said Abrar Hussain, 45.

Several intelligence agencies issued a threat alert that terrorist organisations were planning an attack at the rally.

Abrar voted for Sharif in the last election, but said he was left dismayed by persistently high unemployment during Sharif's tenure.

Sharif, 67, embarked on a roadshow from Islamabad to his ruling party's stronghold Lahore yesterday in a show of strength ahead of the crucial general elections next year.
