Pelosi: Bannon ouster 'worthless' if Trump doesn't change

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney came out as the latest Republican to slam the president for blaming "both sides" after an alleged Nazi sympathizer reportedly drove a auto into a crowd of counter-protesters to the white nationalist rally in Virginia, killing one woman and injuring 19 people.

The resolution, which was cosponsored by 79 members of Congress, offers an official censure by Congress of President Trump for his remarks, and calls for the president to fire any and all advisors who have urged him to cater to white supremacist movements in the United States.

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi on Friday touted a campaign to formally censure President Trump following his controversial response to the violence that resulted from a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va.

Pelosi argued removing Bannon from the White House is meaningless unless Trump opts to shift away from a nationalist policy approach.

Contending that Trump's response to the violence in Charlottesville was "outrageous" and "unacceptable", the Worcester Democrat said America's leaders must send a clear message that such comments aren't just wrong, but "insult the moral convictions and ideals our country was built on".

James Alex Fields Jr, 20, from OH and said to have harbored Nazi sympathies, has been charged with murder. Heather Heyer was struck and killed while 19 others were injured. The House censured him for starting the Mexican-American War.

Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal of Washington and co-sponsors Rep Jerry Nadler of NY and Rep Bonnie Watson-Coleman of New Jersey introduced the legislation requesting Trump be formally reprimanded on Wednesday. Critics said the president failed to adequately condemn the white supremacists who organized the rally.

"I really believe if we are a government made up of three co-equal branches of government, I think it's time for the Congress to step up and into the gap, so to speak", Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C. said in an interview with MSNBC on Wednesday.

"President Trump's growing record of repulsive statements is matched by his repulsive policies", she added. "The president's divisive rhetoric demands action by lawmakers".

Although the resolution isn't likely to pass the House, it could be an issue in next year's congressional races, with Democrats attacking Republicans for not opposing Trump.
