Henne gets first-team reps for Jaguars

Jameis Winston continued his solid preseason, completing 21 of 29 passes for 196 yards and helping the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat woeful Jacksonville 12-8 on Thursday night. For what it's worth, Henne was 6-for-10 for 44 yards, hardly a huge upgrade. Jaguars coach Doug Marrone told ESPN's Lisa Salters at halftime that he wanted Henne to start the second half with the first-team offense because he was unhappy with how the unit played.

Although Bortles didn't deliver a disastrous final line Thursday, completing 8-of-13 passes for 65 yards with no touchdowns or picks, it clearly wasn't enough to convince Marrone that he's still the definite starter.

Marrone and Coughlin have publicly supported Bortles all year, even picking up the fifth-year option in his rookie contract. He was looking every bit the part of a guy drafted with the third-overall pick.

Marrone didn't exactly give a ringing endorsement of Bortles when he said after one practice that Bortles made "some good throws and some horses-- throws". Jason Myers then missed a field-goal attempt from 40 yards.

Brandon Allen is the third-string quarterback, and the second-year player out of Arkansas is a long shot to win the job, but he played well in the fourth quarter on Thursday.

He will have two more preseason games to evaluate his internal candidates. He won't crack the starting lineup, but maybe he can be the team's No. 3 receiver with Marqise Lee out with an ankle injury. Jalen Ramsey, A.J. Bouye and Aaron Colvin did not dress.

Speaking with the media on Friday, Bucs head coach Dirk Koetter said that it was "impossible" to say if Martin would be the team's starting running back upon his return from suspension, per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. Yeldon left the game in the first quarter after suffering a left-hamstring strain and did not return. In many ways, the break would be cleaner if the team minimized its risk and cut Bortles at the end of the preseason, taking the cap hit for next year and preparing to look in the draft for new blood next year. Cornerback Charles Gaines injured his right eye.
